4 Thrilling Spanish Shows on Netflix

Since Narcos, Spanish TV shows have become one of my favorites to watch. The intense storylines, drama, and unpredictability in Spanish shows always keep me hinged (con bisagras). And what I like the most about Spanish shows is that most of them are inspired by true events. Also, I feel that Spanish TV shows are the best getaway from conventional storylines (historias convencionales) where the hero always saves the day.

In this article, I will discuss a few Spanish shows that I believe are worth watching. Even if you’re not into Spanish shows, these shows might develop your taste because they’re anything but boring. So, without further ado, let’s get rolling.

Narcos – Mexico

Narcos Mexico is the sequel of Narcos. After Pablo’s story ended, it was Cali’s cartel time to face the music (afrontar las consecuencias). And, as soon as their arc ended, the Mexican drug cartels’ story started.

Narcos Mexico revolves around several personalities. Among them, Felix Gallardo, Kiki Camarena, Walt Breslin, and Amado Carrillo were the prominent ones. Like Narcos, Narcos Mexico also shows a constant tussle between the good and the bad guys. However, there’s a twist in Narcos Mexico, which revealing here would be a big injustice. But, let me tell you that it isn’t a happy one.

That said, the show is inspired by true events, and it’s fascinating to see how the Mexicans ran their cartel-like an empire.

Tidbit: You don’t have to extensively search for these shows as they are available on Netflix. Just ensure to have a reliable internet connection that saves you from buffering. For that, you may contact Cox servicio al cliente as shows and movies stream like a breeze for me on Cox’s high-speed (alta velocidad) Internet.

La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)

Even if you haven’t seen this show, I bet you must’ve heard of it. It’s because La Casa de Papel has been one of the biggest Spanish hits in recent times. La Casa de Papel has five seasons, excluding Berlin as its prequel.

Although La Casa de Papel is purely fiction, its protagonist, The Professor, makes everything look real. While planning the heists across different seasons, The Professor ensures foolproof and mind-bending planning at every step, and his team executes those plans perfectly.

La Casa de Papel has a bit of both: romance and heartbreak. However, what it doesn’t have across five seasons is a single dull moment (momento aburrido) as it keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats.

El-Chapo

Joaquin “El-Chapo” Guzman started his career in the Sinaloa Cartel, Mexico. When Felix Gallardo was bossing around Mexico, El-Chapo remained on the sidelines as a low-level drug trafficker. However, as soon as the authorities took down Felix Gallardo, El-Chapo knew it was his time to shine. And he surely did, as he became one of the most notorious drug traffickers (famosos narcotraficantes), not just in Mexico but in the entire world.

El-Chapo spans three seasons, but I believe it’s best to watch the third season of Narcos Mexico first to understand who Joaquin Guzman really was. Although the El-Chapo series doesn’t miss any details about this interesting character, you may get a better idea of what the Sinaloa cartel was and how El-Chapo rose to the highest authority (máxima autoridad) in the cartel.

Surviving Escobar: Alias JJ

If you’ve watched Narcos, you’d know that Pablo Escobar had hundreds of sicarios protecting him. One of those sicarios, who eventually got caught by authorities was JJ Velazquez, Pablo’s right hand who did all the dirty work for him.

After Pablo’s downfall, Pablo’s sicarios were left on their own. With the Medellin cartel’s throne up for a grab, a power struggle started among top sicarios. While most of them were pinned down (inmovilizado) by authorities, it was Velazquez who escaped justice before getting caught.

Velazquez’s memoirs in this TV show are truly shocking and one couldn’t simply believe the unimaginable things he did on Escobar’s instructions. Anyway, it’s a must-watch if you want to know how it felt like working for the greatest drug kingpin in the world.

Winding Up: A Few More Spanish Thrillers

Before I wind up, here are some more Spanish thrillers you might want to watch. While I have not watched all of them, I’ve heard they’re equally good as the shows mentioned above.

  • Locked Up
  • Vis a Vis: El Oasis
  • La Valla
  • Arde Madrid
  • Under Suspicion
